More About Trillium Natural Foods

Customers with special dietary needs can find many gluten-free and dairy-free alternatives, from pastas, breads, crackers and cookies to cheeses and soymilks. Herbs and spices are sold in bulk, as are grains and flours, nuts and seeds, teas and coffees, granola, etc. It's easy to purchase just the amount you need, whether you're buying basics for your pantry or "road food" for a camping trip.

Trillium carries personal care items, pet food, and environmentally responsible cleaning products. A solid selection of natural nutritional supplements includes children's vitamins and homeopathic remedies. And of course Trillium stocks a full range of grocery items and dry goods.

Trillium's dairy shelves feature a large variety of organic and Wisconsin cheeses. Hungry shoppers can find frozen treats (fruit, ice cream, and non-dairy), cold organic sodas and juices, snack mixes, and microwaveable vegetarian sandwiches. Local and organic meats, pizzas, pesto and pastas are also available in the freezer. One small corner of the store features the work of local crafters and artisans.

Fresh bread, cookies and crackers from four local bakeries grace our shelves on various days... Cress Spring Sourdough Bakery, Wildpeace Bakery, Nature's Bakery and Potter's Crackers (check with us for delivery day info!)

Trillium Natural Foods, produce section.Produce

Trillium Natural Foods, in western Dane County, is optimally located when it comes to buying fresh, local, sustainably-grown produce. We are committed to filling our produce cooler with the best offerings possible. This means we purchase everything we can from local farmers, both large and small, depending on what is seasonally available (this is, after all, Wisconsin!)

The coop receives local produce from growers who are committed to quality and to fostering community relationships. These growers include: Primrose Community Farm, Vermont Valley Farm, Blue Valley Gardens, Bures Berry Patch, Cold Valley Farm, Shooting Star Farm, Tipi Produce, Ela Orchard, The Buca Farmer and Cress Spring Farm.

Most of the coop's local produce has traveled an average of approximately 11.5 miles. Apples from Ela Orchard, in western Racine County, travel 100 miles to arrive in our cooler, compared to the 1,800 miles traveled by Washington state apples.

Beginning in the spring we offer local staples such as asparagus, rhubarb, spinach and often morel mushrooms. During the peak of the growing season the coop's produce cooler will overflow with local strawberries, salad mix, spinach, peppers, eggplant, radishes, Swiss chard, green beans, tomatoes, sweet corn, summer squash, head lettuce, broccoli, celery, beets, fresh herbs and more. In the fall and winter we continue to provide local produce including potatoes, onions, carrots, apples and apple cider, winter squash, garlic, and of course spinach.

In addition to the wonderful diversity of produce grown near us, the cooler boasts organic "regulars" such as lemons and avocadoes, as well as seasonal fruits which require different growing conditions!

Dairy

We are proud to carry many fabulous Wisconsin dairy products, including:

Many of these products we receive directly from the producer, either when they deliver to us, or we pick it up at their factory. We love being “taste testers” for new products…one of the many benefits of having a direct connection with your food source!

History

Outside View of Store.Mt. Horeb has been home to a natural foods cooperative for twenty-five years. The former General Store Coop evolved out of an earlier natural foods store, The Barley Stone. After being highly volunteer-dependent for about 20 years, The General Store dissolved in the early spring of 2001. Three members, all of them former Board members and two of them former coordinators of The General Store, teamed up to keep a natural foods store in town. A “spring bloomer,” Trillium Natural Foods was incorporated in April 2001.
